East Timor Peace Mission, a documentary by Geneviève Appleton

[Creator supplied by Genevieve Appleton]

In 1992, Rui Marques and others from Forum Estudante Magazine in Lisbon, Portugal organized the East Timor Peace Mission, in which 120 students and journalists from around the world embarked upon a peaceful protest against the atrocities committed toward the East Timorese people beginning in 1975 when Portugal granted the colony its independence and Indonesia illegally invaded.

The protesters boarded the Lusitania Expresso, a Portuguese ferry boat, in Darwin, Australia and sailed to East Timor, where they intended to lay wreaths of flowers on the graves of the hundreds of Timorese who had been massacred by Indonesian soldiers while they were mourning in the Santa Cruz cemetery November 12, 1991.

The video, which I made with my VHS camera when I was a 21-year-old 2nd-year Ryerson University Film Production student, documents the fears and hopes of the protesters, the aggressive, threatening reaction of the Indonesian military to the mission, and the stand-off with fully-armed Indonesian warships, planes and helicopters as the boat approached the shore.

It is part of a permanent museum installation about East Timor in Lisbon, and is being featured as part of a new documentary on the Peace Mission by Francisco Manso Producoes for RTP1 (the Portuguese public TV channel). It is also being screened at the 20th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony and Conference in Timor-Leste, the world's newest democracy, in November, 2012.

  • Don’t forget East Timor

Former Bishop Emeritus of the Japanese Catholic Council for Justice and Peace, Bishop Aloisius Nobuo Soma begins his address by emphasising the UN’s primary role in facilitating self-determination and the independence of former colonies. He argues that the Indonesian government’s behaviour towards East Timor has completely gone against this priority and has deprived Timor of its rightful independence from Portugal. The Bishop emphasises the eight resolutions passed by the UN and Indonesia’s ignorance of them. Next, the Bishop makes an appeal to Indonesia and its core principles asking it to respect the rights of the Timorese and establish peace. The Bishop then explains that despite the treatment the people of East Timor have received from Indonesia, the former do not intend to cause any issues for the latter should they become independent. The Bishop then appeals to the UN to use its power to rectify the situation of the East Timorese while emphasising a Timorese Bishop’s call for decolonisation. He describes the transnational religious advocacy network surrounding the plight of the Timorese. He discusses the importance of NGOs in educating the public and pressuring governments to act. The Bishops ends his speech with a pledge of solidarity with the East Timorese.

The Report and Proceedings of APCET was published by the University of the Philippines in Dilman, Quezon City, Philippines.

It also established a pattern of conversation that party leaders (APODETI, UDT, KOTA and LABOR) should follow with the UN delegation, mostly incriminating FRETILIN as communists. Provides answers to the possible questions the UN may have asked about the provisory administration in general.

Cover of a dossier by CDPM promoting, along with the other international delegations at Newspaper Avante's 82 party, a journey of solidarity to East Timor. According to the document, 1982 was strongly marked by an Indonesian diplomatic offensive in the international arena, and so, it was necessary to foment solidarity in the country and support for FRETILIN as well.
