1. A document with two photographs attached. It is entitled, “East Timor Speaking Tour in Japan 1986-2000 - Notorious for its hard schedule!” The photo above features José Gusmao and Kiyoko Furusawe. The photo the the right features José Guterres. The description is: José Gusmao, a Fretilin activist in Darwin, and José Guterres, another Fretilin activist in Lisbon, visited Japan for a speaking tour in 1988. They visited many cities and tours, spoke more than 20 times in a month. Japan’s annual ‘East Timor Speaking Tour’ started in 1986 with Mgr. Lopes and Mime Ferreira, and continued until 2000.
2. “Simultaneous Activities, Leiden and Amsterdam, The Netherlands.” With the description: 25 November 1988: Pamphlets for two solidarity activities taking place at the same day. In Leiden City an information and scission event about the Right for Self Determinationand Independence. The same day in Amsterdam a solidarity fundraising party with live music. East Timorese Abilio Araujo (Fretelin) and Moses da Costa Amaral (UDT) attended both events as special guests speakers. Both events were organized by the Human Rights organization “Komitee Indonesia,” The Netherlands.
3. AETA Newsletter, Vol. 13, No. 3, December 1988. This was the first demonstration organized in France under the name “Agir pour Timor” (Act for Timor) to make noice about East Timor and let people know about the situation and the struggle. Trocadero is the Human Rights Square in Paris. In the background we see the Eiffel tower for its 100th birthday.

11. A page entitled, “Lusitania Express” 1992: Peace Mission to East Timor. An Initiative taken by Portuguese solidarity activists, in reaction to the Santa Cruz Massacre, Dili, November 1991. Students from 21 countries headed for Dili by boat from Darwin. They told the media they wanted to and in East Timor without Indonesian visas, as to challenge the Indonesian sovereignty claims. The ship gained international media attention, and made it to within sight of Timor island before freed to turn back by Indonesian war ships. Although the Lusitania Express didn’t reach the Dili Harbour, the Peace Mission was a success. It publicly challenged the Indonesian authorities, it gained plenty media attention and it gave moral support to numerous Timorese who followed the news about the ship over the radio.

4. Two photographs. The first: 1993, UK: a demonstration outside the Rolls Royce factory in Bristol to protest about Hawk sales to Indonesia. The demonstration was called “Oil, Arms, Terror” and organized by Hugh Dowson of the United Nations Association. Participants included Estevão Cabral, Prof. John Taylor, Dr. Peter Carey, Liem Soi Leong, and other members of the British coalition for East Timor, etc. The second: 1993, UK: Round-table meeting as part of the Christian Consultation on East Timor. From 1995 until 2004 Progressio facilitated this international ecumenical network.

6. A photograph entitled, “Portuguese UN Mission, New York City, USA” 1993: Australian and USA organizations worked together to bring three Timorese Youth Ambassadors from Australia to the USA for a speaking tour, organized by ETAN. In the USA, they were joined by Abe Barreto and Constancio Pinto. This was the first of more than a dozen U.S. speaking tours that ETAN organized for exiled Timorese activists, many of whom are now Ministers, Parliamentarians and other leaders of the country. On the picture we see (from left to right): Elisabeth Exposto, Maria Bras, Danilo Henriques and Abe Barreto meet with the Portuguese ambassador to the United Nations.

10. A photograph of Mr. Akatani at WESPAC in 1993. Mr. Kan Akatani addresses a meeting of the Westchester People’s Action Coalition (WESPAC). Mr. Akatani was a UN official and became a prominent adviser to the International Federation for East Timor (IFET), which was initiated in 1991 by Jean Inglis and Akihisa Matsuno, both based in Japan and members of the Free East Timor Japan Coalition. IFET became a UN accredited NGO.
