They are asking the committee to provide, information to the public on its work in favour of the people of East Timor to self-determination. That this Committee exclude Indonesia, as a member, from any decision-making process concerning East Timor, under the principle of law that one cannot be both judge and party. It includes:

  1. A bulletin of the National East Timor Winter Mobilization with the title being: “East Timor fights on.” The articles within the bulletin are entitled, “The rape of East Timor,” “How your taxes help the generals,” Faking Timor’s ‘Free choice’” “Why Fretilin will win,” “Timor’s women fight invaders,” “Peacock’s double-talk on Timor aid” and the last page discusses how to reach out and learn more. July 15-17. | 4 pages.

  2. A publication created for the East Timor Moratorium from March 18-20th. The title of the document is: “Timor— dying for its freedom.” The articles within are entitled, “What will you do?” “The Generals have trodden on a scorpion,” “What is Fretilin?” “How Fraser & Peacock help Jakarta’s genocide,” and the last page details the Moratorium and how you can help East Timor. | 4 pages.

  3. Poster produced and distributed by Human Rights organization “Komitee Indonesia” in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The title refers to the holocaust by the Nazi-regime during WWII, comparing it to the genocide in East Timor- that was not heard- of was deliberately ignored - by those elements in the international community that had the power to stop it.
  2. Photograph entitled, “East Timor, South Maluku and West Papua unite Conference in The Netherlands” with the description: “24 April 1981: South Moluccans, East-Timorese and West-Papuans sign an agreement of collaboration. Location: Capelle and IJessel, The Netherlands. The people in the picture are: Lilypaly, Jacob Xavier, Referent Manusama and Ayamiseba. In the background we see the flags of South-Maluku and West-papua. Both flags are forbidden in Indonesia, and until now people still go to prison for raising these flags.

This was the first demonstration organized in France under the name “Agir pour Timor” (Act for Timor) to make noice about East Timor and let people know about the situation and the struggle. Trocadero is the Human Rights Square in Paris. In the background we see the Eiffel tower for its 100th birthday.

  11. A page entitled, “Lusitania Express” 1992: Peace Mission to East Timor. An Initiative taken by Portuguese solidarity activists, in reaction to the Santa Cruz Massacre, Dili, November 1991. Students from 21 countries headed for Dili by boat from Darwin. They told the media they wanted to and in East Timor without Indonesian visas, as to challenge the Indonesian sovereignty claims. The ship gained international media attention, and made it to within sight of Timor island before freed to turn back by Indonesian war ships. Although the Lusitania Express didn’t reach the Dili Harbour, the Peace Mission was a success. It publicly challenged the Indonesian authorities, it gained plenty media attention and it gave moral support to numerous Timorese who followed the news about the ship over the radio.

  17. A photograph entitled, “Demonstration by the Eiffel Tower, Paris, France” 12 November 1998: Seven years after the Santa Cruz Massacre. The French solidarity people chose the location of the Eiffel Tower, because it is the national symbol of their country and because it is near the river called Seine. They marched from the Eiffel Tower to the bridge over this river, and then threw flowers in the water to commemorate the victims of Santa Cruz. Organized by Agir pour Timor.

A photograph entitled, “Revealing proof - House Office Building, Washington DC, USA” May 1998: ETAN revealed documentary proof that U.S. soldiers were continuing to train Indonesia soldiers in Indonesia, notwithstanding a Congressional ban on such training in the U.S. which had been in effect for the past six years. ETAN National Coordinator Charles Scheiner, Congresswomen Nancy Pelosi, and ETAN Washington Representative Lynn Fredriksson gave a briefing to Congressional staffers and journalists. Following the outcry, the Pentagon suspended the Joint Combined Education and Training program for Indonesia: it was not resumed for many years.

IFET-OP and the Indonesian project KIPER were the largest international observer delegations. In this photo, IFET U.S. coordinator Pamela Sexton and in country coordinator Joseph Nevins prepare to visit IFET teams deployed in every district of Timor Leste.

A photograph entitled, “On plane between Dili and Darwin” 6 September 1999: IFET-OP observers had planned to stay in Timor-Leste for at least a month after the referendum, but Indonesian/militia violence and the inability of international forces to address the deteriorating security situation caused IFET observers in Dili (the last remaining international observers or journalists outside the UNAMET compound) accept evacuation by the Australian air force on the night of 6 September. The last IFET observers were evacuated from Baucau the following day. In the photo, IFET observers Jill Sternberg and Charlie Scheiner being evacuated to Darwin on an AAF Hercules.

The two men on the bikes are Indonesian soldiers (without uniforms) who had earlier been shooting around the quarters.

  16. Newspaper article written by solidarity activist, Sweden. August - September 1999: Gabriel Jonsson is the chairman of the Swedish East Timor Committee. He wrote this article in his own language. In short: “Stöd Östtimor!” means “Support East Timor.” This article was published on 29 August 1999, in a Swedish newspaper named, “Aftonbladet” and it presents the situation in the days before the referendum. He concludes by asking his government to act to make the Swedish political parties respect and realism the outcome of the referendum, to support further UN presence and to assist building a free East Timor.

  17. Articles by Gabriel Jonsson. August - September 1999: Gabriel Jonsson is the chairman of the Swedish Östtimorkommitten (or the East Timor Committee). He wrote these articles in his own language. They were published in Swedish newspapers. In short: “Omvärden bör stötta ett fritt Östtimor” means “Indonesia will have to let East Timor be free.” The article was published on 4 September 1999, only a moment before the outcome of the referendum was announced. The article is about what would happen after the results were announced and also gives information about the period before 1999 and how the writer sees the situation in a free East Timor.

(Bye Bye). A famous Dutch cartoonist named Opland illustrated the broken relations between The Netherlands and Indonesia. The conflict started when the Dutch Minister of Development Aid expressed his concern about East Timor during an official meeting with President Suharto in Jakarta. The cartoon shows a worried official meeting with President Suharto in Jakarta. The cartoon shows a worried Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Hans van den Broke and Minister Jan Pronk watching Indonesia breaking away. By their side is former Dutch-Indonesian colonial ruler Raymond Wasterling who waves his sword and says: “I would love to do something about this.” In reply, President Suharto states: “We have the right to create our own massacres.” | Dutch translation as well

Solidarity Portugal Presentation

This presentation was created by Solidarity Portugal by CIDAC. A presentation about Xanana Gusmão, the first page reads, “When Xanana is arrested in 1992, 40,000 signatures are collected in Portugal in 5 days and delivered to the UN secretary General representative in Lisbon.”

The second slide reads, “And here we must acknowledge the undeniable role played by international solidarity. Solidarity as a whole, even provides tons, the Timorese, a lesson that I know, many consciences do not want to accept: a global vision of our struggle!” this was a message to the Timorese in the diaspora from Xanana Gusmão (1 May 1992)

The third slide is about the Pope’s visit to Portugal in 1982 with various newspaper headlines attached.

The fourth slide is about the Permanent Peoples’ tribunal session on East Timor in Lisbon on July 19th-21st 1981.

The fifth slide is when Portugal joined the EEC (European Union) in 1986, the European Parliament became an additional intervention ground for Portuguese solidarity.

The sixth slide is about documents removed from East Timor were essential to enhance public awareness in Portugal.

The seventh slide is about the information activity aimed at “contributing to the clarification and strengthening of public opinion demanding truth and accuracy” (1 January 1985)

The eighth slide is about raising awareness on the East Timor issue was also done in schools, from basic level with cartoons, educational building, exhibitions - to the universities (1985)

The ninth slide is in 1987, at the invitation of APPTL, the bishop of Setubal spoke before the UN Special Committee on Decolonization in 1987. In 1990, he collects 167 letters of bishops from Europe, Africa and the Americas to support the request for a referendum launched by Mons. Belo. He wants to deliver the letters to the UN S.G. but the Vatican forbids it.

The tenth slide says, “After the referendum in 1999 tens of thousands of people formed a human chain linking the office of the UN representation in Lisbon and the embassies of the 5 countries with veto right in the Security Council, requesting a direct armed intervention of the UN.
