Poster produced and distributed by Human Rights organization “Komitee Indonesia” in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The title refers to the holocaust by the Nazi-regime during WWII, comparing it to the genocide in East Timor- that was not heard- of was deliberately ignored - by those elements in the international community that had the power to stop it.
  2. Photograph entitled, “East Timor, South Maluku and West Papua unite Conference in The Netherlands” with the description: “24 April 1981: South Moluccans, East-Timorese and West-Papuans sign an agreement of collaboration. Location: Capelle and IJessel, The Netherlands. The people in the picture are: Lilypaly, Jacob Xavier, Referent Manusama and Ayamiseba. In the background we see the flags of South-Maluku and West-papua. Both flags are forbidden in Indonesia, and until now people still go to prison for raising these flags.

This was the first demonstration organized in France under the name “Agir pour Timor” (Act for Timor) to make noice about East Timor and let people know about the situation and the struggle. Trocadero is the Human Rights Square in Paris. In the background we see the Eiffel tower for its 100th birthday.

  11. A page entitled, “Lusitania Express” 1992: Peace Mission to East Timor. An Initiative taken by Portuguese solidarity activists, in reaction to the Santa Cruz Massacre, Dili, November 1991. Students from 21 countries headed for Dili by boat from Darwin. They told the media they wanted to and in East Timor without Indonesian visas, as to challenge the Indonesian sovereignty claims. The ship gained international media attention, and made it to within sight of Timor island before freed to turn back by Indonesian war ships. Although the Lusitania Express didn’t reach the Dili Harbour, the Peace Mission was a success. It publicly challenged the Indonesian authorities, it gained plenty media attention and it gave moral support to numerous Timorese who followed the news about the ship over the radio.

  17. A photograph entitled, “Demonstration by the Eiffel Tower, Paris, France” 12 November 1998: Seven years after the Santa Cruz Massacre. The French solidarity people chose the location of the Eiffel Tower, because it is the national symbol of their country and because it is near the river called Seine. They marched from the Eiffel Tower to the bridge over this river, and then threw flowers in the water to commemorate the victims of Santa Cruz. Organized by Agir pour Timor.

ETAN National Coordinator Charles Scheiner, Congresswomen Nancy Pelosi, and ETAN Washington Representative Lynn Fredriksson gave a briefing to Congressional staffers and journalists. Following the outcry, the Pentagon suspended the Joint Combined Education and Training program for Indonesia: it was not resumed for many years.

In this photo, IFET U.S. coordinator Pamela Sexton and in country coordinator Joseph Nevins prepare to visit IFET teams deployed in every district of Timor Leste.

A photograph entitled, “On plane between Dili and Darwin” 6 September 1999: IFET-OP observers had planned to stay in Timor-Leste for at least a month after the referendum, but Indonesian/militia violence and the inability of international forces to address the deteriorating security situation caused IFET observers in Dili (the last remaining international observers or journalists outside the UNAMET compound) accept evacuation by the Australian air force on the night of 6 September. The last IFET observers were evacuated from Baucau the following day. In the photo, IFET observers Jill Sternberg and Charlie Scheiner being evacuated to Darwin on an AAF Hercules.

  16. Newspaper article written by solidarity activist, Sweden. August - September 1999: Gabriel Jonsson is the chairman of the Swedish East Timor Committee. He wrote this article in his own language. In short: “Stöd Östtimor!” means “Support East Timor.” This article was published on 29 August 1999, in a Swedish newspaper named, “Aftonbladet” and it presents the situation in the days before the referendum. He concludes by asking his government to act to make the Swedish political parties respect and realism the outcome of the referendum, to support further UN presence and to assist building a free East Timor.

  17. Articles by Gabriel Jonsson. August - September 1999: Gabriel Jonsson is the chairman of the Swedish Östtimorkommitten (or the East Timor Committee). He wrote these articles in his own language. They were published in Swedish newspapers. In short: “Omvärden bör stötta ett fritt Östtimor” means “Indonesia will have to let East Timor be free.” The article was published on 4 September 1999, only a moment before the outcome of the referendum was announced. The article is about what would happen after the results were announced and also gives information about the period before 1999 and how the writer sees the situation in a free East Timor.

  4. Two photographs. The first: 1993, UK: a demonstration outside the Rolls Royce factory in Bristol to protest about Hawk sales to Indonesia. The demonstration was called “Oil, Arms, Terror” and organized by Hugh Dowson of the United Nations Association. Participants included Estevão Cabral, Prof. John Taylor, Dr. Peter Carey, Liem Soi Leong, and other members of the British coalition for East Timor, etc. The second: 1993, UK: Round-table meeting as part of the Christian Consultation on East Timor. From 1995 until 2004 Progressio facilitated this international ecumenical network.

This was the first of more than a dozen U.S. speaking tours that ETAN organized for exiled Timorese activists, many of whom are now Ministers, Parliamentarians and other leaders of the country.   1. A photograph entitled, “ETAN’s Second National Steering Committee Meeting” 17 September 1994: The steering meeting clarified the organization’s structure, mission and objectives. It included participants from across the USA, Timor-Leste, Canada, Portugal, The UK, and The Netherlands.

  2. A photograph entitled, “Training for Lobby Days - Amnesty International Office” Washington DC, USA. Beginning in 1994, ETAN brought grassroots activists from across the USA to Washington for “Lobby Days” every year. After a weekend of training and briefings (as in the photo), experienced and new citizen advocates spread out across the halls of Congress, meeting with staffers, Representatives and Senators in between 60 and 200 of the 535 Congressional offices. Many Congressional staffers came to see this as their annual opportunity to learn about Timor-Leste, and Lobby Days usually resulted in Congressional resolutions or joint letters to U.S. and Indonesian government officials. In addition, from 1992 through 1998, Congress gradually tightened restrictions on U.S. military training and weapons sales to the Indonesian military.

  3. A photograph from 1994, Korea: Demonstration by Korea Human Rights Network in front of Indonesian Embassy. They heard of Timor from Progressio Korea local partners, and from meeting JRH at the World Conference on Human Rights held in Vienna in 1993.

Journalists are surrounding the foreign participants of the conference as they marched to the venue. Under Indonesian pressure the Philippines government banned the conference and did not allow foreigners to attend.

A photograph entitled, “Sequence of demonstrations, Bastille, Paris, France” 8 September 1999: Starting on the day that the result of the referendum was announced, “Agir pour Timor” organized daily meetings and marches in front of the Indonesian Embassy and other strategic locations in Paris City. They demanded recognition of the results, the departure of Indonesian military and international intervention. France is a permanent member of the Security Council so the French solidarity activists emphasized that the country must act according to its responsibilities.

Oct: Bishop Martinho da Costa Lopes speaks about East Timor and creates a great sensation among the citizens. Many solidarity groups were formed.
